Cognitive Distortions, Suicidal Ideation and Quality of Life (QoL) in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract

The cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relationship between Cognitive
Distortions, Suicidal Ideation and Quality of Life in OCD Patients. A purposive sampling
technique was used to collect data. Total 60 OCD patients participated in current
research; both males and females were selected from indoor and outdoor department of
different government hospitals of Lahore. The participant's age range was 18-45 years.
Method: Research instruments used in current study were, Obsessive Compulsive
Symptom Checklist (Dawood, 2013), Cognitive Distortion Scale originally developed by
Young and Brown (2003), third edition called the YSQ-S3, which was translated in Urdu
by Malik and Ishfaq in 2013 was used. Suicidal Ideation Scale originally developed by
Rudd in 1989 while translated in Urdu (by Ghafoor 2013and Kainat and Ijaz in 2013) and
Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHO, 1996). Findings of Correlation Martix indicated
that there were significant positive relationship among OCD, Suicidal Ideation and
Cognitive Distortion. It has been specified that there was significantly negative
relationship between quality of life and suicidal ideation. Females showed higher score
on suicidal ideation. The cognitive distortions about future were higher among single
patients other than married. Male patients scored higher on quality of life other than
females.The main implication of assessing the cognitive distortions is that it can help in
future management of OCD patients
